LORD Server for Windows

LORD Server hosts Legend of the Red Dragon on a Windows computer, in the manner of TWGS for TradeWars. Players connect to it directly by telnet, and BBSes link to it with an rlogin door, so players from several boards can share one realm. One server hosts several separate games (A, B, C …), each with its own players.

The game itself is LORD FP 5.02, the Free Pascal version of Legend of the Red Dragon, built for 64-bit Windows. Each player who enters a game gets their own copy of lord.exe; the server handles the connections, logins and menus.

The current version is 1.4. Downloads: https://games.theiguru.au/lordsrv/

What it does

Connections

  • Telnet: players connect with any telnet program and make their own account (a name and a password).
  • Rlogin: a BBS door logs its players straight in. The account is made from the BBS user name the first time, with no password.
  • BBS sign-up keys (1.4): other BBSes sign up for a key themselves and link from anywhere, without asking the server's sysop first. Their players' accounts carry the BBS's tag (Bob@SHS), so the same name on two BBSes is two players.
  • An rlogin door can take the player straight into a game and back to the BBS afterwards (xtrn=A).

The server

  • Several games on one server, each with its own players, settings and folder.
  • A live console showing who is connected, where from, in which game and node, and the log as it happens.
  • Commands to disconnect players, manage accounts and BBSes, set up and reset games, and change the settings on a form.
  • Runs in its own console window, or as a Windows service with no one logged on. The console attaches to a running service.
  • Sysops can run the game set-up program (lordcfg) remotely from the game menu.
  • Players are saved when they hang up, are disconnected, or the server stops.
  • Idle time-out, connection limit, address deny list and a log file.

The game

  • The full single-BBS LORD: the forest, the Inn, masters, the Red Dragon, player fights, marriage, mail and the daily news.
  • LADY scripts: LORD 4.06's forest events, and 4.07-style events installed from lordcfg.
  • DOS LORD 4.06 In-Game Modules (IGMs) in Other Places, run in DOSBox-X with LORD Server's own FOSSIL driver (1.1). Tested with The Dragon Vault, Barak's House and The Pawn Shop 3.40.
  • lordcfg's player editor, game options, tournaments, and the item and monster tables.

Requirements

  • 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, or Windows Server 2016 or newer.
  • About 50 MB of disk for the programs, plus the games.
  • Memory: a few MB per player, and about 30-50 MB more for each player who is inside an IGM at the time.
  • For BBSes on the internet: a port forward on your router (see Network and firewall).
