new uses REACH.CFG, with any -players, -days, -hollow, -peace, -difficulty or -seed given on top. It refuses to replace a running game unless -force is given; the old game is kept as OLDGAME.DAT. For -difficulty, 1 is Easy, 2 Normal and 3 Hard.
daily starts a new game if there is none, or if the last one ended and AutoRestart is on (or every night with DailyReset); otherwise it plays the day's turn. Then it writes NEWS.TXT, the Hall of Fame and MAINT.LOG.
Files in the game folder
| File | What it is |
|---|---|
REACH.CFG | Settings for new games |
REACH.DAT | The game. REACH.NEW and REACH.OLD are short-lived copies made while saving; if REACH.DAT is ever missing, the programs put it back from them |
REACH.BK0-BK6 | A copy of the game before each night's turn (7 days) |
EVENTS.DAT | What happened, for each house (7 days kept) |
MSGS.DAT | Messages between players |
NEWS.TXT | The last night's news and standings |
FAME.TXT | The Hall of Fame |
MAINT.LOG | One line for everything maintenance did (MAINT.OLD once it passes 256K) |
ERRORS.LOG | Doors that stopped with an error |
OLDGAME.DAT, OLDEVENT.DAT, OLDMSGS.DAT | The previous game |
REACH.LCK | A folder that exists while a program is changing the game |
MAINT.RUN | Exists while maintenance runs |
A lock or MAINT.RUN left behind by a crash clears itself: a door's lock after 20 seconds, maintenance's and reachcfg's after 30 minutes.
Backups
Back up the whole game folder. To go back a day, stop the BBS event, copy the right REACH.BKn over REACH.DAT, and start it again.
