Players and accounts
Every player has an account on the server, and a character in each game they play.
Telnet accounts
Telnet players make an account (a name and a password) the first time: they type NEW at the name prompt. Then they log in with it. AllowNewUsers=0 stops new accounts; adduser still makes them. Players change their password from the game menu (P).
Names are 2 to 30 characters: letters, digits, spaces and - _ . '. They start with a letter or digit. Passwords are stored salted and hashed in users.dat.
BBS accounts (rlogin)
BBS players get an account the first time they come, with no password: the BBS has already logged them in.
- From a BBS listed in
RLoginAllow, the account has their BBS name (Bob). - From a BBS with a key (1.4), the account has their BBS name and the BBS's tag (
Bob@EXB). So the same name on two BBSes is two players.
An rlogin account can't log in by telnet, and an rlogin can't use the name of a telnet account. passwd <name> <pw> turns an rlogin account into a telnet one.
Characters in BBS names that accounts don't allow are dropped; a name with nothing usable left is refused with “can't be used here”.
Characters
Inside each game, players make their LORD character as usual: an alias, a gender and a class. An account can have a character in every game. The game matches a character to its account by the account name (the “real name” in the drop file the server writes), so renaming or deleting an account leaves its characters behind.
Sysops
Sysops (sysop <name>, or Sysops= in lordsrv.ini) get:
- [!] on the game menu, which runs lordcfg for a game over the connection;
- the top security level in the games.
Only make trusted accounts sysops. A BBS account (Bob@EXB) can be made a sysop like any other.
The game menu
LORD Server ----------- [A] Legend of the Red Dragon 0 on now [B] The Second Realm 2 on now [W] Who's on [P] Change password [!] Set up a game [Q] Quit
The games (with how many are on each), W who's on, P change password (telnet accounts), ! set up a game (sysops), Q quit.
Managing accounts
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
users | List them: Id, name, type (T telnet, R rlogin, S sysop, D disabled), created, last call, calls. |
disable <name> / enable <name> | Stop an account logging in, or allow it again. |
passwd <name> <pw> | Set a password. |
adduser <name> <pw> | Make a telnet account. |
deluser <name> | Delete an account (its LORD characters stay). |
sysop <name> / unsysop <name> | Sysop or not. |
To stop a player playing one game only, use lordcfg's player editor for that game.
