LORD Server - Getting started
=============================

This is the short version for game sysops. README.TXT has every setting and
command.

1. START THE SERVER
-------------------
Start menu > LORD Server > LORD Server (console).

If you installed it as a Windows service, the server is already running and
this opens its console ("[attached]" in the title bar). Otherwise the server
runs in that console window while the window is open.

The console shows the server, who is connected and the log, and takes
commands on the line at the bottom. Type help for the list.

2. THE FIRST SETTINGS
---------------------
In the console type:

  settings

and set (Up/Down to choose, Enter to change, S to save):

Server name shown on the log-in screen and menus
  Telnet port 23 by default
  RLogin port 513 by default
RLogin only from your BBS's address, so only it can rlogin players in
Sysops your account name (see step 3)

After saving it offers to restart the server, which it needs to use them.
(The settings are kept in lordsrv.ini in the server folder; you can also
edit that with Notepad and type restart.)

If you change the ports, let the new ones through Windows Firewall (the
installer's firewall rule allows lordsrv.exe on any port).

3. MAKE YOURSELF A SYSOP
------------------------
Telnet to the server, choose NEW and make an account. Then in the console:

  sysop <your name>

A sysop gets a [!] option on the game menu that sets up a game over the
connection, so you can look after the games from anywhere.

4. SET UP A GAME
----------------
Each game (A, B, C ...) has its own settings, kept in its folder (games\A
and so on). To change them, type in the console:

  config A

That opens LORD's set-up program for game A in a new window:

1 Game options: forest fights per day, player fights, days before
inactive players are deleted, bank transfers, clean mode, and so on
  2 Tournament settings
3 Player editor: change any player's stats, or give them a new day
4 Weapons, armour, masters, monsters and the Red Dragon
  5 Game status
E LADY events: extra forest, Inn and bank events from LADY scripts
R Reset the game (the same as the reset command below)
  Q Quit

Changes take effect for the next player who enters the game; the server
doesn't need a restart.

The same program runs from the game menu's [!] option (sysops), or on the
server: lordcfg.exe -p C:\LORDSRV\games\A

5. START A GAME AGAIN (RESET)
-----------------------------
In the console:

  reset A

It asks first. Players in game A are disconnected (their games save and
close), then every player, all mail and the daily news are deleted, so the
next visitor starts a new game. The game's settings (lord.ini) are kept.

6. MORE GAMES
-------------
In settings, choose "Add a game", give it a name, save and restart. Each
game has its own folder (games\B and so on), made and filled with LORD's
files when the server starts. Games can be closed (Open: No) or removed
there too; a removed game's folder and players are kept.

7. ADD-ONS (DOS IGMs)
---------------------
LORD 4.06's add-ons (In-Game Modules, in Other Places) are DOS programs; LORD
Server runs them in DOSBox-X, which it installs in its dosbox folder, with
the game folder as C:\LORD\ as on a DOS BBS. To add one to game A:

  a. Unzip it into a folder of its own in the game folder, e.g.
     games\A\VAULT.
  b. In the console type dos A : a DOS prompt opens in the game folder,
which is C:\LORD\ there. Run the IGM's set-up (e.g. CD VAULT then
VAULTCFG) and tell it: LORD is in C:\LORD\, the port is COM1 with a
FOSSIL driver (LORD Server loads one), the drop file directory is D:\.
Let it add itself to Other Places. EXIT closes the window.
  c. If it didn't add itself: config A > O and add it with the command its
     documentation gives.
  d. Try it: in the town square press O and pick it.

README.TXT section 8 has the details and what to do when an IGM doesn't work.

8. LINK A BBS
-------------
Make an rlogin door on the BBS. Synchronet: an external program with this
command line and no drop file:

  ?rlogin <server address> -t xtrn=A -P

xtrn=A goes straight into game A; leave -t xtrn=A out to show the game menu.
Accounts are made from the BBS user names the first time each player comes.

9. EVERYDAY COMMANDS
--------------------
who who is on, and in which game and node
kick <#> disconnect someone (# from who); kick all
  users the accounts
  passwd <name> <pw> set someone's password
disable <name> stop an account logging in (enable undoes it)
config <game> set up a game
dos <game> a DOS prompt in the game folder (for IGMs)
reset <game> start a game again
settings the server's settings (ports, games ...)
  restart restart the server
shutdown stop the server (games save their players first)
quit close the console (in the server's own window, this
                      also stops the server)

10. AS A WINDOWS SERVICE
------------------------
A service runs with no one logged on and starts with Windows. If you didn't
choose it when installing: Start menu > LORD Server > Install as a Windows
service (or type service install in the console). Windows asks for
administrator rights. Remove the Windows service undoes it.

Or, as an administrator in the server folder:

lordsrv -install install the service and start it (starts with Windows)
lordsrv -uninstall stop it and remove it
  lordsrv -start start it
lordsrv -stop stop it (also Start menu > Stop LORD Server)
